Hello Everybody. I took few days of to go in a short trip to Buenos Aires with some friends. Short but really nice trip. Great way to get into the vacation mode. NICE HINTS FOR CHRISTMAS & BIRTHDAY GIFTS I SUGESTÕES LEGAIS PARA PRESENTES DE NATAL E ANIVERSÁRIO

Hello everybody. I would like to share with you all some nice hints for gifts (christmas gifts, birthday gifts, etc). As I always say...its not about the money you are willing to spend, but the energy you are willing to apply - to think about something appropriated and especial, out of the ordinary and to go for, trying to find exactly what you pictured. Personaly I like giving silver jewelery as gift (and of course I like to receive too!). Why? First, it's a gift that is out of the ordinary; second, silver isn't a material that will get a lot of damage with time, and if it gets damaged you can fix or clean (so its a gift that will least for a long time); and third, price for silver jewelery is great.;-) Here in Rio there is this store called Monte Carlo Jóias that I really like. They have amazing beautiful silver jewelery - very well finished stuff - for very little money (I mean, prices start really nice, but keep in mind....sky is the limit over there). Gostaria de compartilhar com todos vocês algumas dicas bem legais para presentes (presentes de Natal, presentes de aniversário, etc.) Como eu sempre digo ... não tem nada a ver com o dinheiro que você está disposta a gastar, mas com a energia que você está disposta a aplicar - para pensar em algo apropriado e especial, fora do comum e ir a luta, para encontrar exatamente o que você imaginou. Pessoalmente eu gosto de dar jóias de prata de presente (e é claro que eu gosto de receber também!). Por quê? Primeiro, é um presente diferente, fora do comum; segundo prata, não é um material que danifica facilmente, e quando danificado pode ser consertado (seu presente vai durar muito tempo - isso é prova de qualidade!); e terceiro, o preço das jóias de prata é ótimo.;-) Aqui no Rio existe uma loja chamada Monte Carlo Jóias que eu realmente gosto. Tem jóias de prata incríveis - muito bem acabadas - por muito pouco dinheiro (quero dizer, os preços começam lá embaixo, mas lembre-se .... céu é o limite por lá). Olha só o brinco na imagem ao lado. FASHION HOUSES IN RIO DE JANEIRO I ATELIÊS DE MODA DO RIO DE JANEIRO

Hello everybody. Take a look at my last acquisition. It's a guide of the fashion houses in the city of Rio de Janeiro writen by Marina Ivo (called Guia de Ateliês de Moda do Rio de Janeiro). At the guide, the fashion houses are presented by neighborhoods and each one receives grades acording to the prices they usually charge. Plus the author suggests the closest place with nice food for relaxing after shopping. How came no one thought about that before? That is one of the questions she raises in the beggining of the book. Olá pessoal. Olhem só minha última aquisição. O Guia de Ateliês de Moda do Rio de Janeiro, escrito por Marina Ivo. No guia, os ateliês são apresentados por bairros e cada um recebe notas de acordo com os preços que costuma cobrar. Além disso, a autora sugere o local mais próximo para café, salgadinhos e doces depois das compras. Como ninguém pensou nisso antes? Essa é uma das perguntas que ela faz no início do livro. THROWAWAY FASHION I MODA DESCARTÁVEL

Well, raise the hand who never bought some skirt ridiculously wierd (texture, color or shape), just becasue it was fashionable at the time, concious that few weeks later would, at best, throw at the bottom of a drawer. Or, throw the first stone who never bought a blouse because was really cheap and then, after washing the first time, realized it was damaged for good (because of the cheap materials or processes envolved).


Anyways...this is what we call throwaway fashion and we all know that this isn't very ecofriendly (that is, at best, the proper word, because the impact goes further - social implications). Might be good for keeping the engines of capitalism running, but...relates to social exploration and waste of raw materials and energy.


Well, I am also against the fashion that does not last.

Bem, levante a mão quem nunca comprou um saia ridiculamente estranha (por conta da cor, da textura ou da forma), só porque era moda na época, consciente de que algumas semanas mais tarde, iria, na melhor das hipóteses, jogá-la no fundo da gaveta. Ou, jogue a primeira pedra quem nunca comprou uma blusa, porque era muito barata e, depois lavá-la pela primeira vez que percebeu que ela estava arruinada (por causa dos materiais baratos ou dos processos de tingimento ali envolvidos).


Bem, isso é o que chamamos de moda descartável e todos nós sabemos que isso não é muito ecológico (isto é, na melhor das hipóteses, a palavra apropriada, porque o impacto vai além - implicações sociais). Pode ser bom para manter os motores do capitalismo funcionando, mas...relaciona-se a exploração social e a desperdício de matérias-primas e energia.


Bem, para o bem do planeta, também sou contra a moda que não dura. E você? Vamos agir com consciência?!!

LUXURY & COMFORT I LUXO & CONFORTO

I totally agreed with Chanel and, as a teacher, I must say: do not take this sentence for simploria or granted; after all...define comfort(?). Not that easy, right? That is because comfort is a very subjective term and so, opened to different interpretations.


Once I was interviewing a diabetic woman with serious vascular problems (while writing my master thesis) and I asked her about what used to be the main factor in shoes to make her comfortble. She answered straight: "hight hills, because I am short and with hills I feel I more confident". You might be thinking "silly woman(!)", after all we all know that hight hill are not nice for people with vascular problems. But, her answer thought me, in pratical terms, that "comfort is very subjective".


So, just to clarify, when Gabrielle Chanel says "luxury must be comfortable", she is actually saying..."luxury must make us feel good"..."or it can't be considered luxury".


How about you? What would be the main factor in shoes to make you comfortble? Think about it.

Estou absolutamente de acordo com Chanel e, como professora, devo dizer: não tome essa frase por simplória ou óbvia. Afinal: defina conforto(?). Não é nada fácil, certo? Isso porque conforto é termo muito subjetivo e, portanto, aberto a diferentes interpretações.


Uma vez eu estava entrevistando uma mulher diabética com graves problemas vasculares (para minha dissertação de mestrado) e perguntei a ela sobre o que, para ela, seria o fator principal num calçado para deixá-la confortável. Ela respondeu sem pensar duas vezes: "saltos altos, porque eu sou pequena e com sapatos de salto me sinto confiante". Você deve estar pensando: mulher tola (!), afinal todas (os) nós sabemos que saltos altos não são apropriados a pessoas com problemas vasculares. Mas, sua resposta me ensinou, na prática, que conforto é termo muito subjetivo.


Então, só para esclarecer, quando Gabrielle Chanel diz "luxo deve ser confortável", ela está realmente dizendo..."luxo deve nos fazer sentir bem"..."ou não pode ser considerado luxo".


E para você? O que um calçado precisa ter para fazer você se sentir confortável? Pense nisso.
